Madeleine Albright Wore a Blinged-out Brooch With an Important Political Message at the DNC.

Speaking at the second night of the Democratic National Convention, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright spoke on behalf of fellow former Secretary of State and current Democratic nominee for the presidency Hillary Clinton — all while wearing a giant, sparkling brooch in the shape of an eagle.

Albright is known for using her extensive collection of brooches as a crucial component to communicating political messages — so much so that in 2009, the longtime diplomat penned a memoir on the topic, entitled Read My Pins: Stories From a Diplomat’s Jewel Box.

In her book, Albright explains that while serving as an ambassador at the United Nations, Saddam Hussein called her a serpent — and so Albright started wearing an antique snake brooch she had whenever she had dealings with Iraq, a way to use fashion to make loud points quietly.
