Should South Africa's matric dances get a Met Gala makeover?

Matric dances in South Africa have long been a big night on the school calendar; the planning around the special occasion just keeps getting fancier and more stressful.

Matric dances are evidently not what they used to be. Just this year, social media has been buzzing with learners digging deep into their parents' pockets for thousands to spend on human hair wigs, designer gowns and suits, flawless make-up and luxury rides to make an entrance.

What was once a farewell dinner with a bit of music has turned into a red-carpet event of its own. With concepts like “The Matric Met Gala” entering the scene, it’s clear that the farewell dinner-and-dance is about to get a serious facelift.
